Groove Guide Review

Auckland's K Rd on a Saturday night is a happening place for sure, and last week was even busier with bStreet happening at a few bars in the area. Backstreet Bar, however, was not part of bStreet, but was hosting Clap Clap Riot's 'Yoko Ono' single release party.

Opening up the show was Waikato's The Good Fun, who have continued to grow in popularity since winning the National Final of the Smokefree Rockquest in 2010. Kicking off their set with current single 'Karaoke' had the crowd quickly move close to the stage with their dancing shoes on.

The crowd continued to grow and by the time Clap Clap Riot took to the stage the venue was near capacity.

The band was tight and fired through songs from their 2009 EP as well as their forthcoming album. Front man Stephen Heard's voice was sounding great and the whole band was having a ball. 'Everyone's Asleep' was a highlight and had the crowd clapping and singing along.

The band closed with Yoko Ono and made it memorable by singing the entire song in Japanese - no easy feat, but these guys did it effortlessly. A great finish to a great night, one of the best local gigs i've seen this year.
